Saturday October 31, Doors open 6 PM:  Public Samhain Circle
At:     Hopkinton YMCA, 45 East Street, Hopkinton MA
Fee:  (Suggested Donation) SEF Members $5 / Nonmembers $10

This Samhain, join the SEF in the celebration of the ancient Roman festivals of the Parentalia and Feralia.  We shall journey to a House of the Dead, make the traditional offerings, share a communal feast with our ancestors, and conclude by propitiating potentially malign spirits.

Participants are encouraged to bring photographs of their ancestors.

We will have a brief walk outdoors from Hayes Hall to the site of the ritual, so dress accordingly.

As usual, and of particular import to this rite, participants should bring fully prepared food to share, with the living and the dead.

There will be a simple potluck supper after the Ritual. Please note that we will not be able to heat food onsite, but we will be able to set up some crockpots. If you wish to bring a potluck dish, please bring items that will not need to be heated OR bring something in a crockpot, fully prepared and cooked, along with any necessary serving utensils. We’ll supply cups, plates, eating utensils, and some hot beverages. (Alcohol is not allowed at the YMCA.) Soups, breads, and desserts will make for a hearty autumn feast!

Rules for the 2015 Lammas Bake-Off:

1. This year’s Bake Off Theme: Lemony goodness! The refreshing summery flavor of lemon must be a main element in your baked goods. This year, we’re relaxing one of the rules: the item can be anything baked. Cookies, bars, cake, muffins, crepes, cobblers, you name it! As long as that cool lemon flavor comes through. Use lemon juice, lemon zest, lemon extract . . . you get the idea. BUT! (you knew there would be a catch, right?) We’re adding a challenge: NO chocolate. Nope, not any. Your luscious treats will stand on their fruit-a-liciousness alone. 2. All entries must be made from scratch. 3. Entrants must bring enough to have about 40 samples (not full servings, just a taste – think sample tables). 4. All entries must be accompanied by a full list of ingredients. 5. The winner will be announced during the Closing Circle. Let the baking begin! Judges for the contest will be those attending the Faire; it will cost $1 to sample and vote. If you are interested in baking, or have questions, please email us: SEF at ElderFaiths dot Org lemongoddess

At: Hopkinton YMCA, 45 East Street, Hopkinton MA

Our name “February” (for the second month of the civic year) comes from the Latin “Februa”, meaning “purification”. The Purification Rites of Februa were held in February by the early Romans, and involved cleansing and purification with water. This festival coincided with the Roman season of heavy spring rains.

(Alcohol is not allowed at the YMCA.) Soups, breads, and desserts will make for a hearty winter feast!
